Supply Chain Management

Supply Chain Management

There has been a lot of confusion in defining what SCM is. After much discussion and experience, the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) has attempted to provide a rather inclusive definition. “Supply Chain Management is an integrating function with primary responsibility for linking major business functions and business process within and across companies into a cohesive and high performing business model. It includes all the Logistics Management activities “that plans, implements and controls the efficient, effective forward and reverse flow and storage of goods, services and related information from the point of origin to point of consumption in order to meet consumers’ requirements” as well as manufacturing operations, and it drives coordination of processes and activities with and across marketing, sales, product design, finance and information technology.”

We rely on a more cogent definition “Supply chains are complex systems involving multiple businesses and organizations with different goals and objectives. Logistics management is a process of integrating the maintenance and movement of goods and management and coordination of the supply chain activities. Logistics management works with a single organization while supply chain management is involved with multiple organizations.”

In recent years, advances in Digital Technology are radically impacting global supply chains transforming how businesses manage their own organizational and Supply Chain structures. The Digital Supply Chain basically defines a supply system whose foundation is built on web enabled capabilities. In essence, digital supply chains aim to minimize waste and bring greater profits through increased efficiency. Tony Hines was the first to coin this term in 2001 to explain a transformation from analogue supply chains to the digital supply chain. This conception explained that digital supply chains were configured to distribute goods or services that had previously been supplied in physical form. The digitalization of hitherto physical form removed time, distance and cost from the supply chain and information replaced inventory by designing digital supply chains.

These technologies include predictive analytics to optimize inventory allocation and forecast demand. Automated replenishment solutions, Robotics to speed up assembly or picking products and materials.

This course will provide a solid understanding of what a supply chain is all about.
